POTS is frequently dismissed for years before diagnosis. Our integrative approach — including IV therapy and autonomic rehabilitation — is changing outcomes for patients who had nowhere else to turn.
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome — POTS — is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed chronic conditions in medicine. Patients report heart racing upon standing, crushing fatigue, brain fog, dizziness, and near-fainting episodes. Many are told it is anxiety. Many more are sent from specialist to specialist for years before anyone connects the dots.
What Is POTS and Why Is It So Often Missed?
POTS is a form of dysautonomia — dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system that controls heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation. When a person with POTS stands up, their heart rate increases by 30 beats per minute or more (or rises above 120 bpm) within 10 minutes, without a corresponding drop in blood pressure.
Despite being estimated to affect 1–3 million Americans, POTS remains poorly understood in conventional primary care settings. The symptom overlap with anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia means patients frequently receive mental health referrals when their condition is physiological — and treatable.
The Link Between POTS and Post-Viral Syndromes
We have seen a significant increase in POTS presentations following viral illness, particularly post-COVID. Research now supports what many patients knew: viral infections can trigger or unmask dysautonomia. The mechanisms appear to involve autoimmune dysregulation, small fiber neuropathy, and impaired baroreflex function.
How We Approach POTS at Innovative Medical Associates
- Thorough diagnostic workup including tilt table testing, labs, and autonomic function assessment
- IV saline and nutritional infusions to support blood volume and reduce symptom severity
- Dietary interventions — high sodium, increased fluid intake, small frequent meals
- Customized exercise rehabilitation protocols that avoid triggering flares
- Addressing co-existing conditions: mast cell activation, Ehlers-Danlos, autoimmune triggers
- Targeted supplementation: electrolytes, CoQ10, lipoic acid, and B-vitamin support
The most important thing we tell POTS patients is this: your symptoms are real, they have physiological explanations, and there are evidence-based interventions that help.
What Outcomes Can Patients Expect?
POTS management requires patience. Most patients see meaningful improvement in 3–6 months with a consistent protocol. Realistic goals include reduced symptom frequency, improved exercise tolerance, better cognitive function, and decreased reliance on IV hydration over time. Full remission is possible for some patients, particularly those with post-viral presentations.
